2014 Tenuta di Trinoro Le Cupole

Varietal:  -
Region:  Tuscany, Italy
Winery:  Tenuta di Trinoro

Tenuta di Trinoro is a wine producer on the borders of Umbria and Tuscany. It was established in 1992 by Andrea Franchetti from Bordeaux cuttings, and now makes a range of wines focused largely on Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

The estate is located in a natural amphitheatre, where the mesoclimate is warm and well-protected by the surrounding hills. This means that the grapes can remain on the vine as they ripen, and the resultant fruit is concentrated and rich. The soils are made up of blue clay, rock and gravel, which is particularly well-suited to Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

The flagship wine is the Tenuta di Trinoro, a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Proportions of each variety change depending on the conditions of the vintage, and the wine is only made in small quantities, around 800 cases a year. Trinoro's second wine is Le Cupole di Trinoro, which is usually Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant. Varietal Merlot and Cabernet Franc wines named Palazzo and Magnacosta complete the lineup.

Tasting Notes

Of all his wines, the flagship Tenuta di Trinoro provides the greatest insight into Andrea Franchetti’s approach to winemaking. The proprietary blend of cabernet franc, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, and petit verdot grown on soils of limestone, alluvial plain, and clay changes each year based upon which grapes are the best from that vintage, wed not to any predetermined recipe, formula, or even flavour profile. This Super Tuscan wine showcases the distinct terroir and grapes from this remote estate at the furthest confines of viticulture in Tuscany. Franchetti’s distinct style is apparent throughout each wine and each vintage. Richness and structure, depth of flavour and complexity — these are the hallmarks of his wines.

94+ points, Monica Larner (Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate):
"Andrea Franchetti's 2014 Tenuta di Trinoro represents the vintner's definitive shift to a more elegant and focused style of winemaking. This wine was once celebrated for its super ripe aromas and sweet, jammy flavors. But this cool vintage hammers home a new approach that sees less bulk and density—something Franchetti has been enthusiastically embracing over the past five years or so. The results are stratospheric. The Tenuta di Trinoro property sees pretty high average temperatures in summer. The quality of fruit offers special grace and elegance in cool years like this. Among the many samples I have tasted across Tuscany from the 2014 vintage, Tenuta di Trinoro is a memorable wine and a landmark achievement."
