Background

The Giaconda vineyard was established by Rick Kinzbrunner; a mechanical engineer who became interested in wine in the early 1970's and spent the next ten years travelling to wine-growing areas overseas. After a brief stint in New Zealand he studied at Davis University in California and worked at some of the most respected wineries in the Napa and Sonoma Valleys, namely Stag's Leap, Simi and Matanzas Creek - In Europe he worked a 'stage' with the Moueix group, co-owner of the fabled Chateau Petrus.

Situated nine kilometres south-west of Beechworth in north-eastern Victoria, the Giaconda Vineyard and Winery is in the foothills and within sight of the Victorian Alps. The winery overlooks the vineyard and is constructed of local granite blocks and hand-made bricks.

The wines are hand-crafted; in the case of the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir using traditional Burgundian methods, and the Cabernet, Merlot and Cabernet Franc according to classical Bordeaux techniques including long maceration - Only top quality French oak is employed. Giaconda wines have been keenly received by winemakers, retailers and enthusiasts alike and have been well received with many accolades from the wine press.

Reviews

95 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown (Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate):
"The 2009 Aeolia Roussanne was a great vintage for this unique style. The wine is 100% barrel fermented in 15% new oak spending a total of 10 months in wood, going through full malo-lactic. Pale to medium straw in color, it gives wonderful aromas of spiced apricots, ripe pear, cinnamon-dusted apple slices plus pinches of coriander seed and freshly chopped ginger. The medium to full-bodied, concentrated, spicy palate has medium acid and commendable richness that grows in the mouth and lingers into the very long finish. This makes an incredible glass now, though this Roussanne can age very well. I tried the 2000 vintage during my visit that is developing just beautifully, so as irresistible as it is now, it’s worth keeping a few bottles in the cellar to enjoy over the next 8 to 10 years. 300 cases produced."
